ABOUT JAY HERRIDGE

Jay Herridge is a highly respected BJJ Black Belt and one of the most decorated competitors in the UK grappling scene. Promoted to black belt in November 2023 by Marco Canha, Jay has established himself as a formidable presence on the competition circuit with an impressive track record spanning multiple belt levels.

As a Checkmat affiliate, Jay has competed in some of the most prestigious tournaments across Europe, including the BJJ British Open, English Open Pro, Empire Grappling Southern Open, and Grappling Industries. His competition experience ranges from local UK championships to international events, making him well-known and respected throughout the grappling community.

Jay's journey through the belt ranks demonstrates his dedication and skill development - from competing as a purple belt in prestigious events like the English Open BJJ Championships to dominating at brown belt level before earning his black belt. His technical prowess, particularly in judo throws and transitions, has made him a sought-after instructor.

At Watford Tactical Fighting, Jay brings this wealth of competitive experience and technical knowledge to every class. His passion for developing the next generation of fighters, combined with his proven track record, makes him the perfect coach for students looking to excel in BJJ, judo, and grappling arts.

WHAT WE TRAIN

Watford Tactical Fighting is Hemel Hempstead’s dedicated home for grappling. We don’t dabble — every class is built around the proven disciplines below, taught by people who compete at the top of them.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)

Our flagship discipline. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a ground-based grappling art focused on leverage, positional control, and submission — the same skillset that lets a smaller, calmer person finish a fight against a larger, untrained opponent. Whether you’re chasing your first stripe, returning to the mats after a break, or competing on the IBJJF or ADCC circuit, our Hemel Hempstead BJJ classes cover both gi and no-gi systems under black-belt instruction.

Judo

Judo — the Olympic grappling art — sharpens stand-up entries, grip fighting, and throws that translate directly into BJJ, No-Gi, and self defence scenarios. Beginners welcome: we teach safe breakfalls and posture before any throw is attempted, so you build confidence without absorbing wear and tear.

Wrestling

Freestyle and folkstyle wrestling for grapplers. Wrestling is the bridge between the standing and ground game and is critical for serious No-Gi competition and MMA crossover. Expect explosive level changes, takedown chains, ride positions, and the conditioning that comes free with the territory.

No-Gi Submission Grappling

No-Gi is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu trained without the kimono — in shorts and a rash guard, with no fabric to grip. Faster, more athletic, and the format used at ADCC, EBI and most professional grappling events. Open to ages 16+ at WTF and a natural progression once you’ve covered the gi fundamentals.

TRAIN FOR SELF DEFENCE

Most real altercations don’t look like a movie fight. They start at conversational range, escalate inside two arm’s lengths, and end up in a clinch or on the floor — territory the average person has zero training in. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is widely regarded as the most effective unarmed self defence system precisely because it gives a smaller, calmer person the tools to control a larger, untrained attacker without throwing a strike.

At Watford Tactical Fighting we drill positional self defence in every fundamentals class — escapes from common pin scenarios, frame and create-space drills, takedown defence, and the de-escalation principles that keep you out of a fight in the first place. Our students include working professionals, parents, students, and women looking for practical, real-world self defence training in Hemel Hempstead, Watford, Berkhamsted and Kings Langley.

You don’t need to be fit. You don’t need to compete. You just need to turn up.

FITNESS, STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

Functional strength

Forget the treadmill. A single BJJ class burns 600–1,000 calories, builds functional strength across grip, core and posterior chain, and improves cardiovascular endurance in ways isolated gym work simply can’t replicate. You’re moving constantly — pushing, pulling, bridging, sprawling — against a resisting human, which means every minute on the mat trains strength, cardio, mobility and mental focus at once.

Many of our adult members in Hemel Hempstead start out looking for self defence and stay for the fitness results: measurable strength gains, weight loss, better posture, and the mental clarity that comes from focused training. Whether you’re brand new to fitness or a seasoned gym-goer looking for something more engaging than another spin class, training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo or No-Gi at WTF delivers a workout your body will adapt to and remember.
