BJJ vs Judo vs Wrestling: Which Grappling Style is Right for You?

If you’re new to grappling, the choice between Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo and Wrestling can feel arbitrary. They all involve no striking. They all involve a partner. So what’s the difference, and which suits you?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)

Built around: the ground. Sweeps, guards, passing, submissions.
Tempo: patient. Long matches, technical chess.
Body type: works for everyone. Smaller athletes thrive.
Best for: long-term technical mastery, self defence, MMA grappling, people who want to train into their 60s.

Judo

Built around: the throw. Grip fighting, off-balancing, takedowns.
Tempo: explosive. Matches end fast.
Body type: rewards strength and athleticism more than BJJ.
Best for: people who love standing technique, ex-athletes, anyone wanting Olympic discipline.

Wrestling

Built around: the takedown and ride. Level changes, sprawls, control.
Tempo: the most intense of the three. Conditioning is everything.
Body type: grinders. Tough humans.
Best for: MMA crossover, people who already love hard training, No-Gi grappling base.

The Honest Answer

For most adults walking in cold, BJJ is the gentlest entry. It’s also the most complete self defence art and the most kind to your joints over decades of training. Many WTF members start with BJJ, add Judo for stand-up, and add wrestling sessions for conditioning — you don’t have to pick just one.
