Is BJJ the Best Martial Art for Self Defence? An Honest Answer
By Watford Tactical Fighting • 8 May 2026
Walk into any martial arts school and you’ll be told their style is the most effective for self defence. So is it true for BJJ? Mostly — with caveats. Here’s the honest answer.
Why BJJ Works for Self Defence
Most real altercations end up in a clinch or on the floor. Untrained people don’t know what to do there. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu turns that territory into your territory. You learn to control a larger, untrained attacker through leverage and positioning — without throwing a strike. That alone is rare and valuable.
What BJJ Won’t Teach You
- Striking defence. Pure BJJ doesn’t cover head movement, blocks, or counter-striking. Add a separate striking gym if you want this.
- Multiple-attacker scenarios. Grappling shines one-on-one. Don’t go to the ground if there are two of them.
- Weapon defence. If they have a weapon, run.
What it WILL Teach You
- How to stay calm under genuine physical pressure
- How to break grips and create distance
- How to control someone without hurting them — useful when the alternative is legal trouble
- How to survive on the ground long enough to either escape or get help
The Real Win
The biggest self defence benefit of BJJ isn’t the techniques. It’s the calm. After six months of training, your nervous system stops panicking when someone grabs you. That’s the part that actually saves you.
